Somehow the usable RAM is restricted to 4GB. Press Win+R to open a Run prompt and then execute the command msconfig. This will open the System Configuration. Click on the Boot tab and then Advanced options. The box Maximum memory should be unchecked to allow using the maximum installed memory. If this is not your case, next thing to try is
Addingthe extra virtual addresses to a 32 bit will not make any 32 bit software access more than 4GB of RAM. And obviously, 64 bit software won't work in a 32 bit operating system with PAE (completely incompatible, not same architecture). There is no advantage to adding more than 4GB of RAM.
TheX550jx-xx187d has 4GB of RAM (can't be removed) and a single RAM slot. I successfully added Corsair type CMSO8GX3M1C1600C11 and my total RAM is now 12GB, but not symmetric dual channel. It works on 12 GB, you can verify here. I replaced old 4GB RAM slot with Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600MHz KVR16S11/8 and it works great.
Zulfeous Completely depends on your motherboard, however, most systems will allow mix n match RAM as long as all sticks can operate at a common speed and remain stable. This means that dual channel memory isn't going to work (in most cases) but you should be able to run a 2x 4GB + 1x 8GB configuration.

That means it can easily take advantage of more than 4 GiB of RAM. Additionally, Visual Studio is "Large Address Aware".
